Wilco with special guest Yo La Tengo

Covaleski Ballpark, South Bend, Ind.
July 30, 7 p.m.
$44 (general admission)

It still amazes me how many people have never heard of Wilco — one of America’s greatest rock bands of the 21st Century. Like The Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones, Wilco has been an evolving musical story over the course of its now 15-year career: from alt.country upstarts to sonic experimenters spurned by their own record label, to mellow, California-style rockers. Lately, they’ve pulled all those phases together with a semi-eponymous record – Wilco (The Album) – and a tour that showcases the band at the absolute height of its powers. Wilco’s current lineup has been together for five years, and the four musicians who’ve joined co-founders Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt on the last two albums have fully executed Tweedy’s enormous vision for mixing roots music with grand musical experimentation. Their live shows of late include songs from the entire catalog, with the older numbers totally reinvigorated by the band’s newest members, especially guitarist Nels Cline, who may just be the best guitarist of any genre these days. The show at South Bend’s Covaleski Ballpark on July 30 is the band’s last Midwest concert of 2010, with the splendid alternative rock band Yo La Tengo serving as openers.

REVUE is giving away three pairs of free tickets to see Wilco and Yo La Tengo on July 30 in South Bend! To enter, simply fill out this form.

(Yes, it's a bit of a hike to South Bend, but no different than going to Detroit for a show!)
