Music, art, technology and helping people out, that’s what it’s all about. For one day each year the GeekAid Music and Arts Festival brings it all together.
The day-long event (now in its fifth year) features local bands, art and food booths, and a beer tent. You might even run into a live statue. Proceeds and donations from the event will fund scholarships for graduating high school seniors who want to pursue a technology or art related education. |
Former "Last Comic Standing" contestant and herb guy Doug Benson will be bringing his act to Dr. Grin's Comedy Club (GR) from Aug. 26-28, with performances at 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and Saturday performances at 8 pm and 10:30 p.m.; $10 on Thursday, $15 on Friday, $20 on Saturday.
Last GRAM on the Green of the Summer Friday Grand Rapids Art Museum is presenting An Dro for its Outdoor Summer Music Series. A Celtic band known for its creative interpretation of traditional acoustic music, An Dro will take the stage on Aug. 27 from 7-9 p.m. Free!
Dream Children Friday Oregon Dreamchild will be rockin' the party at the Grand Woods Lounge on August 27 with their repertoire of '70s covers as well as a collection of original songs.
Psychedelic '60s Friday Papa Pete's is throwing its Welcome Week Bash on Aug. 27. Travel to the '60s with psychedelic funk band Doctor Dwyer and special guests Me3Mind and Nunca Duerma; $5.
Brews and Tunes Friday–Saturday
Head up to Traverse City for the Summer Microbrew & Music Festival from Aug. 27-28. This two-day event will feature more than 45 breweries and 150 kinds of beer, as well as entertainment from performers such as Brett Dennen, Lubriphonic, Down the Line, Bump, Mike Moran, Levi Britton, and Grand Traverse Pipes and Drums; $50 two-day pass, $30 single day.
Opa! Friday–Saturday Kick up your heels for the first annual Grand Rapids
Yassou! Greek Cultural Festival, hosted by the congregation of Holy Greek Trinity Orthodox Church. With traditional dance demonstrations, Greek beers and imported wines, a Greek marketplace, and an assortment of Greek foods, the festival will be rounded off by a performance by the Levendes, a Greek and American band based out of Detroit. Friday 3–10 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. $2 entrance fee.
All Night Long Saturday Brother Bill will be playing one of its famous three-hour sets at Harvey's on the Mall (Kzoo) on Aug. 28; FREE for 21+.
UV Hippo Saturday Founders Brewing Company (GR) is hosting Ultraviolet Hippopotamus at 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 for ages 21+; $5 cover for Mug Club Members, $7 for non-members.
Songs from the Stage Benefit Saturday
The Riviera Theatre (Three Rivers) will present a Songs from the Stage Benefit Voice Recital on Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. to raise money for the Three Rivers High School Aristocrats; FREE, donations appreciated.
