In these uncertain economic times, it's good to be frugal. As part of its public service (not court-ordered by the way) REVUE dispatched its team of writers and minions to find the best deals in West Michigan on things our readers highly value: food, beer, wine, music, shows, art and getting around town. Dig into these stories for our findings -- and save yourself a bundle!

Cheap Beer: Walldorff Brewpub’s Blackberry Belgian Triple

Sam Sherwood, Walldorff’s brewer, is known for getting creative with his brews. In the past, the brewpub has seen Strawberry Rhubarb Cream and Bee Sting Honey Rye Ale. This winter, Walldorff (105 East State St., Hastings) will see Sherwood’s latest creation, Blackberry Belgian Triple. He describes the 9.8% ABV brew as a “big beer,” and having a “yeasty character, but with fruit added.” The beer is created from the same yeast as Sherwood’s mainstay brew, Belgian Golden, and the blackberries added give it a dark red coloring, almost resembling a red wine. “Beer and wine drinkers can both appreciate this beer,” Sherwood said. “You don’t notice the alcohol that much because the blackberries cover the alcohol flavor really well.” But Sherwood warns, “more than two [beers] would be a little too much.” Grab a beer – or two, if you’re feeling adventurous – when this new brew goes on tap Dec. 31, just in time for the New Year. Price is $5 for a 10 oz. glass. Lindsay Patton-Carson
