Although book lovers citywide grumbled when they heard the news that the 28th Street branch of Barnes & Noble would be moving into Woodland Mall, there's one distinct advantage in the situation: its inventory needs to be cleaned out. To do so, it's having a storewide sale until Oct. 20 and moving into its new home on the 21st.The bargain book tables will expand throughout the store as everything from autobiographies with thick spines to graphic novels and volumes of manga get a price cut.

Sponsored by Reading is Fundamental, a program created in conjunction with Grand Rapids Public Schools, the third annual Batty About Booooks event takes its yearly tradition up a notch, expanding its appeal for all ages. Restaurant Mangiamo! is transformed into a haunted house, complete with ghostly musicians and a funhouse-style cellar, and characters from children's books wander about, ready to greet guests. With a pasta buffet and "spooky desserts," an appearance from Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, and a raffle for those who come in costumes, make this fine night of mischief a lead-in to Halloween.

There's no strict schedule, or cost for this Kent District Library dance party. It's an all-ages event at the library's Sand Lake branch, which is an ideal location for a haunted house. It's a dead ringer (pun intended) for an old-school, broadsided red barn, where everyone with a desire to kick off their Halloween early can come in for sweets and treats.
