The first annual Fresh Art Live, a contemporary art auction, will be held at the Muskegon Museum of Art on May 1. In honor of the Museum's 98th anniversary, artists who hail from West Michigan and Midwest, as well as nationally acclaimed artists, will have work up for grabs at the event. Art connoisseurs and admirers can join together with the creators themselves for one art-inspired night to bid on original creations.
"It really is a great opportunity to buy an original work of art by some of the better names in our region," said Art Martin, collections manager and assistant curator at the MMA.

The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. with a reception featuring refreshments and a cash bar, followed by the live auction. With more than 85 artists enlisted to date and almost 100 pieces to be auctioned off, it will be an entertaining evening of fast-talking and bidding-paddle style. Attendant must register beforehand and receive numbered paddle to participate in the live auction.
Every piece begins at $98 and, while a select few have a reserve price, usually the standard rule of thumb applies: the highest bidder wins.
"We hope to raise a few thousand dollars," Martin said. "Although, a lot will not sell at the retail value."There are a few pieces, such nationally known glass artists Steven Powell's Licking Squishy Squish, that have reserve price. The retail value of Powell's piece is $13,000, and if the bidding does not reach the reserve price, than the piece will not be sold.
According to Martin, the art market in the area is not strong. However, the hope is to raise not only money, but awareness about the local art scene and an appreciation for original art.
"It gives people the chance that would not otherwise buy art, to put it in the hands of everybody, and get people interested in original art," Martin said.
All proceeds will directly support exhibits and programs offered at the MMA.
For a complete rundown on all of the pieces available, the Fresh Art Live Web site offers a photograph, description, artist's name and retail value for every lot. With such a wide variety of art and artists, it is best to familiarize yourself beforehand.
