Sitting outside a deceptively well-equipped control room of Feverbell Recording Studio on a comfy couch, the aggressive indie prog-metal band Come Find the Lion chatted amiably about its forthcoming disc, Creepin’ Me Out.
With wildly diverse musical interests ranging from rap to film scores the band tries to mash its seemingly irreconcilable influences into a cohesive whole. Although, if CFTL had to pick a band it all agrees on, it would be He is Legend.
“We stay in left field,” admitted Jay Eldridge the bassist, adding that despite this, “the pieces always fit.”
“We tried to keep [this album] a little more even keeled, more ‘rock-y’. A lot of southern influence - really poppy vocals - a lot more mature sound,” said Zach Burger, vocalist for the band.
Having been together in the current lineup for four years, the band is excited to have this project nearly completed.
“Usually we take forever to write songs, but this time it went pretty fast,” Burger said.
Engineer Matt Geroux was on hand to explain his take on the process of recording the new disc.
“They’ve been known for taking their sweet time with recording, but with this latest album they were pretty prepared,” Geroux said.
Even so, the process has been dragged out somewhat, due to the personal friendship of the band and the engineer.
“When you become really close friends and you record a band, no matter how professional or legit the studio gets, it takes longer because of that,” Geroux said.
The band’s relationship with Feverbell Recording started a few years ago.
“Zach has a solo acoustic project called This April. Really emo,” Geroux said. “I didn’t want to record his emo band, actually. But then he came in and he was really open, and one of the most unique people.”
As a mastering engineer who occasionally gets overflow work from an L.A. based mastering company, and as the owner of a recording studio which has been steadily busy since its inception, Geroux has a proven ear for excellence despite only being on the low side of his 20s. This fact, plus his years of experience as a working musician playing drums, puts him in a prime space for working with bands that want a professional recording as well as some insight into how to put together a worthwhile product.
