Roger Waters will build "The Wall" in Grand Rapids next summer.
The former Pink Floyd frontman, who last brought The Wall to the Palace of Auburn Hills in fall 2010, will now bring a massive production of the classic rock album to Van Andel Arena on June 6. Waters and concert promoter Live Nation announced the Grand Rapids date today as part of a national tour announcement at Chicago's Wrigley Field, which will host the tour a few days after the Van Andel show. The tour will also visit Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The announcement has been the source of much speculation around Chicago in recent days. Waters recently told Rolling Stone magazine that he'd created an outdoor version of the tour and run some lighting tests at several American ballparks, including Wrigley. The tour will visit several ballparks as well as indoor arenas such as Van Andel and Joe Louis.
Tickets ($57.50 to $201.50) for the Grand Rapids date go on sale Nov. 14, via Ticketmaster.
Released in Nov. 1979, The Wall was Pink Floyd's eleventh studio album. Written largely by Waters, the record centers around a character named Pink and his increasing sense of isolation. Waters conceived the album during the band's first stadium tour in 1977 at a show in Montreal, when a group of noisy fans irritated him so much that he reportedly spat on them. After the show, according to a biography of the band, Waters told a friend that the tour had left him feeling alienated and that he wanted to isolate himself by constructing a wall across the stage between the performers and the audience. That concept was later brought to life on the tour to support The Wall.
The album, which has sold 30 million copies worldwide, spawned a massive theatrical tour that was performed in just four cities originally. Later, it was made into a feature film.
Waters talks about the concept behind the tour in the video from his YouTube site below, and you can also check out an incredible HD version of "Comfortably Numb" featuring David Gilmour from earlier this year here.
