The new Pyramid Scheme music venue in Grand Rapids has announced its Grand Opening shows, which feature a pair of performances by renowned indie band that doesn't play too often anymore: Guided By Voices.
The downtown venue today announced on Facebook that the Dayton-based band would play two shows on April 29 and 30 to celebrate the venue’s grand opening. Tickets are $35 and will be available beginning Friday, March 18 via Ticketweb or at the venue, 68 Commerce SW in downtown GR.
Today’s announcement follows a couple of other announced shows that feature local West Michigan bands including several bands that record for Friction Records, the label owned by Pyramid Scheme co-owner Jeff Vandenberg. Vandenberg and his sister, Tami, are involved in the business along with Mark Sellers, who owns several downtown drinking and dining establishments including Hopcat, Stellas Lounge, The Viceroy and McFaddens.
Family connections also played a role in landing Guided byVoices for the club’s grand opening, according to a source familiar with the booking. Sellers’ younger brother, John Sellers, is a friend with the band, which he wrote about in his book Perfect From Now On: How Indie Rock Saved my Life.
Formed in 1983 by songwriter Robert Pollard, GBV’s frequently rotating lineup plays a mix of punk, garage, psychedelic, and progressive rock with a touch of British Invasion. Amazon.com heralded their 1994 album Bee Thousand as #1 of the "100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums Of All Time" and Spin magazine picked it as #26 in the"Top Records of the Past 25 Years."
After breaking up in 2004, GBV reunited its “classic” lineup for a limited number of U.S. dates in 2010, including the Matador Records 21st birthday celebrations in Las Vegas last fall. Most recently, the band announced a few gigs in its hometown of Dayton as well as the Sasquatch Festival in George, Wash.
