Local, International Artist, Sandra Hansen
Hosts Painting Exhibition from her two years of
traveling, exhibiting, teaching, and painting
in Scandinavia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and India and the U.S.
After returning to Holland in July 2008, Sandra had an exhibit before going to Lund, Sweden for five months. During this time she took to the streets of the medieval town, painting markets, botanical gardens and any number of other interesting subjects. Sandra also signed up for a painting class through the Folk University so that she could meet other people with artistic interests. Although based in Lund, Sweden, Sandra traveled throughout Sweden, Norway, and Denmark seeing the incredible landscapes and visiting museums. Many more paintings sprang from these travels.
After a small exhibit in Lund, Sweden Sandra moved on to Pottsdam, Germany outside of Berlin and set up a new base of operations. During the next month she toured an artist colony and painted in the guest house as it was too cold to venture out. Despite the weather, Sandra went to numerous museums and art galleries in Berlin. In March 2009 Sandra stepped up the pace of traveling. She returned to India to paint outdoors. She also taught children again in Varanasi, and Betawar. In April she went to Bangkok for a week where she volunteered to teach at a community center in the slums. She then taught painting at an orphanage in Khon Kaen, Thailand for three weeks. Having spent little time in her life amongst Buddhists Sandra began painting at a Buddhist temple in her spare time. In Khon Kaen, there was a fantastic holiday where everyone poured water on everyone else. Fighting was underway in Bangkok but the holiday cooled it off and travel to Cambodia proceeded as planned. In Cambodia Sandra visited the ruins of Angkor Wat. She spent most days painting and lounging by the hotel pool while recouperating from a sinus infection. With the temperatures hovering over 100 degrees, she enjoyed massages in the open air massage hut and accomplished little. After a two week trip across Vietnam Sandra returned to Sweden where she had a painting exhibition in the village of Bjarred.
Sandra returned home to Holland, Mi for three months before returning to Indi for two major exhibitions. The first was at the American Embassy in Delhi, India. Hundreds of people came through. While the exhibition was going on Sandra traveled to Southern India to give some painting classes to children in the city of Bangalore. On to Kerala, Sandra painted fishing scenes in Fort Cochin and the tea plantations in Munnar. After picking up her paintings in Delhi, Sandra then went to Varanasi where she had her second major exhibit at the Faculty of Visual Arts at Banares Hindu University. For this exhibition, musicians played tabla, violin and flute. Flower garlands decorated a table with an oil wick lamp, the musicians, distinguished guests, and the doorways. A highlight of this trip included an invitation to join an art camp in Varanasi with ten other profesional artists for two days. Each artist painted a scene from the Hindu religious book, the Mahabarata. The finished paintings were kept in India for an exhibition. In late March of 2010 Sandra returned to Sweden and Denmark for two painting exhibitions and a round of teaching adults. She met artists, went to galleries, got new ideas and painted when she could.
So what does the future hold for Sandra? This September Sandra will have two exhibitions in Holland.
- The first one is at Holland Hospital Gallery 602 which is located at 602 S. Michigan Ave. with all new work from her travels around the world. The opening for the show is Saturday Sept. 4 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 2-5:00 pm.
- She will also have a painting exhibit at Freedom Village in Holland, MI during the month of September. There will be a talk on her paintings on September 13th at 10 a.m. at Freedom Village 145 Columbia in Holland, MI.
Secondly, she has been writing a book on her travels which will be illustrated with her paintings. Finally, Sandra is signed up for a full class schedule for the fall at Kendall College of Art and Design.
GALLERY 602 International artist, Sandra Hansen, has returned to Holland after two years of almost continuous travels. During this time she has painted, taught painting, and had exhibitions in numerous countries. Her travels started in India in June of 2008 where she taught painting at the Vidyashram schools in Varanasi and the nearby village of Betawar. Varansi is an incredible city full of bells, hawkers, and dust. It is one of the oldest cities in the world. It awakens each morning at dawn with pilgrims, touriststs, and religious people coming to the Ganges to pray, bathe, sip tea, to wander in markets in little alleys and near old forts and palaces. The schools Sandra taught at are located within a stone's throw of the Ganges River which has been the inspiration for numerous paintings. |
